Anita Smith

I first studied piano in Barre, Vermont with Doris Fowler who would take me to the wooded Adamant Music School in our locale. Adamant was founded by Edwine Behre of New York City, a great concert pianist who also maintained a studio at 162 West 54th Street, for sixty years. Every summer Edwine would bring her entourage of classical musicians to enjoy our relaxed, fresh-air, farming community atmosphere.

In my youth, I studied for four years in Vienna with Theodor Leschetizky, a great piano pedagogue. Later in my adult life, I studied with William Chaisson, Houston, Texas. My association with the Suzuki Method began in 1999, Atlanta, Ga., where I took teacher training in this method from Leah Brammer, Robin Blankenship, and Pamela Smith over the course of several years. The mother-tongue approach, listening first and reading later interested me as well as the idea that any child can learn, not just those "born with it." Of course, much love and effort is required daily to reach success and I remain devoted, dedicated and determined.
